Trevor Fairlie

Counsel, Thomson Reuters 

Trevor Fairlie is a lawyer called to the Bar of Ontario and a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School. He is an adjunct faculty member at Osgoode Professional Development, where he teaches ‘Boards of Directors’ and ‘Mergers & Acquisitions Transactions’.

Trevor is the immediate past Board Chair at Start Proud, and a co-founder, Director and Governance Committee Chair at the Canadian Association of LGBT Lawyers. He is a co-founder and Senior Director, Conference Programming at the award-winning Prisme Law Conference.

Trevor was recognized with the Osgoode Alumni Gold Key (2025), as a Top 30 under 30 Alumnus of York University (2023) and with the Odyssey Award (Emerging Leader) from the University of Windsor (2024).

Abdi Aidid 

Assistant Professor, University of Toronto Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law

Abdi Aidid is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto's Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law and the Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Access to Justice. Professor Aidid’s research and teaching focus on civil adjudication, privacy law, and the intersection of law and technology.

In 2024–2025, Professor Aidid served as a Visiting Associate Professor at Yale Law School and currently serves as the Ian D. Shugart Visiting Scholar at the Canada School of Public Service, where he collaborates with departments across the federal public service on topics related to ethical technology use and privacy. He is a Faculty Affiliate at the Future of Law Lab and the Centre for Ethics.

Gillian Calder 

Professor and former Associate Dean

University of Victoria

Gillian Calder is a Professor and former Associate Dean. She has been teaching constitutional law, family law, and related seminars from feminist, queer and anti-colonialist perspectives since July 2004. Gillian's research is focused on questions of legal imagination, theories of constitutional law, law's impact on understandings of the family and family formation, performativity and storytelling.

 

In particular, she is keenly interested in critical legal pedagogy and the role creativity, ethical imagination and empathy should play in a legal education. Her recent work has focused on law and emotion, where she weaves connections between teaching, embodiment and social location.

Massimo Orsini 

Associate Lawyer, Oziel Law

Massimo Orsini is a business, technology, and intellectual property lawyer with wide industry experience in the areas of software, gaming, healthcare technology, and agricultural technology (agtech). Massimo routinely advises clients on matters pertaining to corporate and commercial law, intellectual property, licensing, and technology.

Massimo obtained his Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Civil Laws from McGill University, where he served as an executive editor for the McGill Journal of Law and Health, a leading peer-reviewed publication, and had the opportunity to clerk at the Provincial Court of British Columbia in Kelowna.

Prior to his legal education, Massimo obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) from Concordia University where he double-majored in philosophy and political science. While pursuing his bachelor’s degree at Concordia, Massimo obtained a scholarship to study at L’Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) as part of an exchange program, and obtained a certificate in post-harvest technologies at the University of California, Davis.

Prior to joining the firm, Massimo practiced at a full-service international firm where he advised multinational and domestic clients on a wide range of intellectual property and technology matters, primarily relating to data security and privacy, trademarks, copyright, patents, marketing, and advertising, and domain name disputes. He also has experience advising clients on inter-jurisdictional M&A matters and has acted on complex IP and commercial litigation, including in the areas of patent and inventorship disputes as well as anti-counterfeiting litigation.

Rachel Clark

Chief Executive Officer,

Skadi Cyber Defense

Rachel Clark is a technology innovator with over 35 years of experience in the technology and Information Security (Infosec) fields. Rachel began her career in the military, serving in the United States Marine Corps, and the United States Navy where she was an electrical engineer and engineered Inertial Navigation Equipment on Trident C-5 Ballistic Missile Submarines.

 

She attended Morrisville State College where she received a degree in Journalism, attended Syracuse University and New York University for Information Management and has a Master’s Degree (High Distinction) from the University of Toronto. Rachel has held several executive positions, most notably at Universal Music Group where she headed the technology practice, as well as American Airlines, Hyundai Automotive, TD Bank Group, and State Street where she was a Vice President of IT Security.

 

She has several patents in process for advanced analytics, novel processes for risk scoring in the cyber threat space, and mathematical ranking algorithms. She is a sought-after public speaker on STEM, cybersecurity and anti-fraud, as well as Diversity and Inclusion where she shares her expertise in these areas.

Jonathan Griffiths

Practice Advisor and Equity Ombudsperson at the Law Society of Alberta

Jonathan currently serves as a Practice Advisor and Equity Ombudsperson at the Law Society of Alberta. He obtained his B.A. in political science from the University of Calgary in 2006, his LL.B. from the University of New Brunswick in 2009 and he completed his LL. M. from York University in 2018.

 

Jonathan also teaches family law as a sessional professor at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law and serves on a number of boards and committees including as a director on the board of the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta) and as the Chair of the CBA’s National Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee.

Prior to his work with the Law Society of Alberta, Jonathan spent 11 years in private practice as a family law lawyer primarily serving 2SLGBTQ+ clients.  A proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community himself, Jonathan has dedicated his career to the improvement of legal services to these communities.  He is the past Chair of the CBA’s National Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity Section and was a founding director of the Canadian Association of LGBTQ Lawyers (CALL/ACAL).

Director, Practice Supports & Resources, LSO

Phil graduated from Dalhousie University with a B.Sc. (Hons) and an LLB. He was called to the Bar in Nova Scotia and Ontario. He also holds a post-graduate certificate from Centennial College in e-commerce. Phil practiced criminal law exclusively as a sole practitioner before joining Legal Aid Ontario as the Coordinator of Lawyer Relations. He was responsible for marketing the Legal Aid Online billing project which automated lawyer payments. The project had a 90% uptake by lawyers within the first 6 months.

 

He joined the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2008 as Counsel in the Professional Development and Competence department and has been involved in CPD planning, accreditation, and certified specialist certification. He participates in developing resources for solos and small firm lawyers and for the past seven years has worked on the Practice Management Helpline team assisting lawyers and paralegals with issues related to the Law Society By-laws, Rules of Professional Conduct and professionalism questions.

 

He has recorded over 35 podcasts on basic technology for lawyers with David Whelan. He is currently a member of the Ontario Criminal Lawyers Association and is the Photo Editor of “For The Defence” magazine.

 

He is a presenter at continuing professional development programs and has spoken at the Criminal Lawyers Association, Hamilton Lawyers Association, Toronto Lawyers Association, and Law Society programs. He has been a lecturer and instructor in the professional responsibility course.
